Checking CPU & Memory

How to check your CPU and Memory resource usage on your pc.

If your pc is running low on CPU and/or memory, Estimating Link as well as other software applications, may not perform to capacity.

Estimating Link Minimum Requirements

To adequately run Estimating Link, the following minimum system configuration is recommended:

Processor 2.0 GHz Intel or AMD processor or higher 64 Bit
Memory

4 GB of Ram or higher

At least 10 GB Free Disk Space (initially)

Operating System Windows 10 or higher

Check Resource Usage

To check your pc's CPU and memory, you can use Task Manager.  To open Task Manager, use one of the following commands:

  • Hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Escape keys simultaneously.
  • Right click on the Windows button and select Task Manager.
  • Right click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager.

The Task Manager window will appear:

You'll want to pay attention to the first two vertical columns, CPU and Memory.

CPU

CPU (Critical Processing Unit) - Intel microprocessor that performs calculations (more precisely-computations).

  • Reaching the limits of your CPU can cause inefficiencies and possible freezes and crashes.  This is because your CPU cannot keep up with the tasks it is given.
  • An average CPU percentage is below 10% at idle.
  • High Idle CPU usage: If you're not running any programs and your CPU usage is still above 20%
  • 90% CPU usage may spike to 90% if you're doing intensive tasks like end gaming or graphic design.  As long as your CPU calms down after you're done, it should be fine.

Memory

Memory is temporary data storage space used by active processes being executed by the CPU.

  • An average Memory usage is 15-30% at idle
  • 50% is fine (as you're not using 90-100%) and it shouldn't affect your performance.
  • If the memory is between 90-100%, you will want to find out why.
